Another long pause…….

Well…… sooo….. yet again there seems to have been a delay in postings!! This time I do have a valid reason!

In between my last post and this post Mrs J, Little J and I have moved house and have stated a 1:1 scale terrain decorating project, so no hobby building/painting work has taken place, although there has been 3 games of Bolt Action completed with varying successes!

The first two games were completed on the same day. Mr A, Heer J, Comrade S and myself met in Mr A’s garage to be confronted with a 10ft long by 4ft terrain board. A 4ft x4ft town had been added!

The Town....
The Town….

For this games day we tried something different, two games running at the same time at different ends, the loser’s of the first game would then face each other, followed by the winners facing each other!

Initially I met Herr J in the farm area of the board, it was a capture the objective scenario…..

The objectives were the Farm House, a bunker, and a down Sherman. To win the attacker needed to hold two out of the three objectives, if the objectives were shared then it would be a draw and the winner would be decided on the amount of opposition order dice held.

I would be the defender and Herr J the attacker. in truth is was so long ago I can only really remember a few details…..

A stand out moment was running a squad of infantry towards Herr J’s troops when an air strike was called, the area had too many of my units in with pins to survive an air strike! the result on the game was a win for me, I think we each held an objective and one was contested, i went through to the ‘final’ as I held more of Herr J’s order dice!

Mr A was beaten by Comrade S meaning that in the final I would meet Comrade S in the final.

For the final I would be the defender holding the town and Comrade S had to take the town square fountain, and two houses one at either side of the town. This was a resounding win for Comrade S and the Russians, out of 15 units I was left with only 5. Comrade S still had 10 out of 16 units and the objectives were his!!

My third game was just this previous weekend. I went against Mr A and the British in a similar scenario, this time we would both hold one edge of the town and we would need to capture the fountain plus the oppositions targeted building it win the game.

This was the first time I had played in an urban setting and boy was it a different way of thinking! the building were both opportunities for cover but physical blocks for both thinking and movement – it was amazing! Unfortunately by the time i had worked out my game plan the game was all but over, I had lost too many units and gained too many pinned units to enable a significant attack/response. The fountain and Mr A’s designated house were his with the victory!

For only a second time in all the games we played a unit had equal amount of pins to its morale  value, causing the unit to flee rather than being destroyed!

This game made me think and learn a lot, so much so I was still thinking about the game a few days later. the biggest thing I have taken from the day apart from ‘pins mean prizes’ is that if you take the time at the beginning to think of a plan stick to it! for the first three turns I was reactive and not proactive, I was reacting to Mr A’s moves instead of concentrating and playing my own. it was another excellent gaming experience!

The more table time we have the more gems I find from Bolt Action!

until next time (I’ll try not to leave it so long!!)

A road trip…..

For a few weeks now myself and others in the geek clan have not summoned up the energy or enthusiasm to build, paint or do anything remotely link to Bolt Action.

We’ve still enthusiastically talked at great length about our plans and ideas but it hasn’t translated into any ‘productive’.

We needed a kick up the posterior, this kick came in the form of Warlord Games Games Day 2014, an open day at Warlords HQ in Nottingham.

Mr A had shown us the open day on the Warlord website a few months ago, we had all got rather excited and booked the tickets and waited, got more excited and waited some more. Then the 26th July arrived.

A 400mile round trip was a head of us, Mr S and I left my house at 0445 to start the pick ups. By 0600 Mr A and Mr D had joined us in the geek mobile and we were off to Nottingham!

From 0600 till 1030 when we arrived at Warlord HQ we discussed anything and everything geeky and Bolt Action related.

Upon arrival and after eating breakfast we proceeded to queue for our wrist band and free miniature, PC Dogsberry, and we were in! We had a quick glance around the first welcoming lobby, we the proceeded to enter the main hall. First stop shopping!

We all spent a quick trolley dash picking up the items we had been planning for week. For me I purchased a Sherman tank, M8 Greyhound, Half track, and the Historicon 2014 minature of Dick Winters. Being the US and having a squad of Airbourne this was a must!

We then had a break and a drink, then we walked round the tables.

The table walk round was brilliant, all the exhibitors running the demo games were very friendly. The tables were really good and I think we all picked up some ideas for our own terrain boards.

Here’s a few snap shots, apologies for the lack of photos but I was caught up in the day!

After another break we then went on a tour of the factory. We saw the two workshops, the resin casting area and the metal forge.

All the Warlord guys were really friendly in each of the areas. In the metal forge you were able to cast your own miniatures. Mr D cast 12 German’s, Mr S cast 12 Russians and all were given a free Druid miniature.

After another brief walk round we brought our trip to Nottingham to an end and hit the road again.

I would like to say thank you to Warlord Games for putting on such a relaxing friendly open day. It was really nice to share the day with people who were just as enthusiastic about the games as we are.

There was never any pressure to play, chat or buy from any exhibitors or companies at the day.

The open day has really lit a fire in all of us, so much so at 2100 when Mr S and I arrived back home we built our tanks whilst waiting for Mrs S and Mrs J to get in!

Thank you again Warlord, we will return!

An old out house…….

Well the ramshackled farmhouse is built and awaiting installation on a game board in the near future, but it would look silly on its own, wouldn’t it?

To turn the farmhouse in to a farmstead it needed a shed/small barn/man cave.

So here goes:

To make the below the following materials were used:
Foam core board
Lolly sticks
Long matches
Cheap wall filler
Paint
GW earth wash
Beach sand

Initial skeleton

Roofing material installed

Strategic priming

Painted and weathered

The Second Installation

The bunker and farm house were part of my ‘annual leave project’, that was seven weeks ago – I’m a bit behind on the posts!

The bunker and farm house were both built over three Bolt Action focused days.

On one of the days Mrs J and I were off out in the afternoon, this left me twiddling my thumbs in the morning, to overcome the thumb twiddling I decided to make another military installation.

This installation was to be a mortar/machine gun pit. A small enough build to start in half a day!

This time I had a plan of the look in my head and I proceeded to start cutting foam board! Here are the results……

An old farm

I was really happy with the way the bunker came out, so much so I decided to expand the terrain out and scratch build a ruined farm house.

Again it was a build as I went project. The only constant from the previous build was the height of the doors and ceiling.

Each floor of the farm house is a usable space, even the roof.  I think for all my scratch built projects the more area you can use the more variety you’ll have.

The farm house was built using foamboard. I really like the solid feel the foam board gives once the poly filler has set.

Here’s the finished ruined farm house…..

The Bunker

Whilst on a weeks leave I thought I would make a start on scenery and terrain for Bolt Action.

Although I have USMC units (and now Infantry and Airborne!) I fancied building more European terrain.

After a trip to Hobby Craft to pick up some supplies and materials, I set about building.

Being an engineer and working on a personal project, no plans were drawn up. Measurement were made throughout.

Here goes……

The chosen side!

Recently I have made reference to my new geek strand of Bolt Action but I am yet to show my hand as it were!

I picked the Americans, due to the lovely miniatures and the fact I was watching Band of Brothers!

During this shopping spree I had decided I didn’t want to buy a starter army. I couldn’t justify the money without playing first!

After shopping round and looking at the infantry boxes I decided on the US Marine Corp.  Plus I ordered a Medium Machine Gun (MMG) and a medium mortar.

I had already splashed some cash on an Airfix M4A3 Sherman tank from Hobbycraft whilst shopping for our new arrival!

In the end my reinforced platoon consists of:

image

1 x 1st Lieutenant

image

1 x Forward Observer Officer

image

1 x Sniper Team

image

1 x   Bazooka Team

image

image

image

3 x 8 man squads. Each with a NCO with sub machine gun and at least 7 rifles (one squad contains a shot gun).

image

1 x Medium Machine Gun.

image

1 x Medium Mortar

image

1 x M4A3 Sherman Tank.

All have been completed over the last 6 weeks.

All four of us nation’s have been bitten by the BA bug! So much so we are all off to the Warlord Games Games Day next month!

This visit was supposed to be a shopping day, but alas we have broken and ordered more units early.

I’m very excited as my box of US infantry and squad of US Airborne have been dispatched today!

Fingers crossed for a delivery tomorrow!
