GNWC….. The Return!

The rematch is on, the venue set for Thanet, and the participants ready. It was time for titles to be defended and the hope of new winners to be broken……. its time for another Games Night World Championship!

Would Mr S retain the Winners trophy? Would Mrs J retain the Non winners trophy? Would we have new winners? The excitiment is building to 11. Here goes……

For this event Mrs H, Mr P, Mrs J and myself would be playing against Mr S and Mrs S in their home statium in Thanet.

The games commenced after a beautiful dinner of Spaghetti Bolognese followed by Lemon Merengue Pie. The chosen running order was as follows:

Munchkin.

A very close game for all, this was Mrs H and Mr P’s second game. By Level 4 we were all in the swing and cursing/back stabbing like mad! After a dramatic ending where all but two players were on Level 9 Both Mrs H and Mr P won (Mr P assisited and was allowed to move up a level too!) Not bad for their second game!

1st: Mrs H and Mr P (10points each)
2nd: Mrs J (8points)
3rd: Me (6points)
4th : Mrs S (4points)
5th: Mr S (2points)

Zombie Dice:

A five minute filler where the first to scoff 13 brains would take 5 bonus points, everyone else would receive ziltch!

1st: Mrs H (5 bonus points)

(A trend was beginning to show at this point!)

Qwirkle:

Apart from Mrs J and I this was only the second or third time the rest of the part had played this game. I think the more I play this game the more I love how simple it is but how strategic it is!

1st: Mr P (10points)
2nd Mrs H (8points)
3rd: Me (6points)
4th: Mrs S (4points)
5th: Mr S (2points)
6th: Mrs J (1point)

At this point in the championship it looked as though Mrs H and Mr P were flying away with the victors die!

A new game for the GNWC was next, Mrs S’s favourite game…… Pass¬† the Pigs. A ‘pig’ throwing game where the position the pair of pigs land scores you points, unless you ‘pig out’ (both pigs on their sides with one side with a dot and one side without) this will zero your score for that round.

Pass the Pigs:

1st: Mr P (10points)
2nd: Me (8points)
3rd: Mrs S (6points)
4th: Mrs J ( 4points)
5th: Mrs H (2points)
6th: Mr S (1point)

Formula D.

Yes, the game reliant on good dice rolls and a good strategy was next (I should have remembered this!!). This is a game I always look forward to playing, even if it sometimes means I throw caution to the wind!

1st: Mrs H (10points)
2nd: Mr S (8points)
3rd: Mrs J (6points)
4th: Mr P (4points)
5th: Me (2points)
6th: Mrs S (1point)

To finish the evening another game of Zombie Dice was played, this would again offer 5 bonus points to the winner……..

1st to eat 13 brains: Mrs J (5 bonus points)

So the games had been played, the scores total, winners crowned, non winners crowned and commiserations to the , iddle runners. The final table is:

GNWC Thanet Champion: Mrs H, total 35 points
2nd: Mr P, total 34 points
3rd: Mrs J, total 24 points
4th: Me, total 22 points
5th: Mrs S, total 15 points
GNWC Non Winner: Mr S, total 13 points

Well, another event passed with a new throphy recipients, the J house hold is throphy-less. The next GNWC will be at the Bay arena, I will do my best to recieve either one!

Thank you Mrs S and Mr S for a brilliant evening.

Updates, a different Games Night, starting blogging again….,

Well its been an interesting few months, very little blogging, but very interesting.

We have new addition to the geek world joining us in August. I have had an unexpected trip to A&E where my gall bladder was whipped out, and work has been very busy.

Little Geek (arrival in August) has had his furniture build and room cleared for his/our toys! Mrs J and I are in the process of nest building. So far we have rearranged the front room, bedroom and have just completed the garden and man hole (the shed!).  I am so excited and cant wait for LG!

My gall bladder removal came out of the blue, we had the Mums and Dads round for dinner and I experienced heart burn, indigestion,  back pain all in one go. Being a strong brave man I moaned about it to the evening, until it came to bedtime where I couldn’t rest and was moaning in pain.

I vaguely remember saying yes to Mrs J calling the out of hours NHS line, an ambulance arrived, I was taken to the local hospital, moaned in pain and given pain killers, then transferred to another hospital. The next thing I know is a doctor comming round, sending me for a CAT scan, then breaking the news I would lose my gall bladder! All in 24 hours!!! I left hospital the next day and six weks later I have never felt so good!

During my recuperation we had a Games Night held at Mrs H& Mr P’s house. As usual we had a lovely meal of Chicken Supreme and homemade Key Lime Pie (made by Mrs J). Instead of playing tabletop games,  we had an evening of Wii gaming.

Usually I am a Xbox360 man, playing all sorts of games. Recently Mr S and I have had a discussion about the merits of tabletop gaming and computer gaming. We both agreed that for an all inclusive, high conversation, high enjoyment evening then tabletop games are they way forward. Recent Games Nights have proven this. The six of us have had a great laugh, discused varying topics, and couldn’t wait to do the whole thing again.

Now Mr S and I can spend all day on the Xbox or PS3 playing against each other, working together to complete missions and generally behaving like the children we are, but we dont talk or catch up. We are very insular.

The Wii evening broke the insular rule. We were all engaged in the sports, laughing along, chatting whilst others were playing. It was a revelation.

Thank you Mrs H and Mr P for a different  yet similar games night!

Games Night part 2

Well its been a month since my last post and a month since the rearranged first Games Night World Championships has been held.

As mentioned in a previous post this evening was a different take on our regular meet ups with friends.  I had decided to take the games playing to a new level and create a friendly championship. I also used the night as an excuse to introduce our favourite games to a wider audience.

Firstly, you cant have a championship without a trophy so I spent a weekend with my FiL and created this:
image

The trophy was made from a piece of fence post, and constructed in the FiL’s garage over the New Year break!

In the balance fairness FiL also made this for the lowest non winner:

image

The lowests scoring non winner was to receive a Ludo piece constructed from the same fence post as the die.

The rules for the evening were simple:
1. Each couple was to bring a game.
2. The evening was mainly about fun and not serious.

Mr S and Mrs S brought to the table Formula D.

Mr P and Mrs H supplied What Am I Logo Game.

Mrs J and I supplied Munckins, Qwirkle and for an interlude game, Zombie Dice.

The playing order was decided by working out how much concentration was required for each game and putting the hardest thinking game last.

Games order:

Logo
Qwirkle
Formula D
Munchkin

Each player would be awarded points dependant on where they finished. First placed would be awarded 10 points, second place 8 points, third 6 points, fourth 4points, fifth place 2 points and finally sixth place was awarded with 1 point.

Mr S also supplied caricatures based on each persons ‘gamer tag’ and favourite films. These were to come in handy for Munchkin!

After all gamed were played Mr S was the deserved winner, he was leading most games, if he was not winning he was certainly up there!

Mrs J played valiantly, eventually walking a way with the lowest scoring non winners trophy.

In the mid field Mr P, Mrs H, Mrs S and myself.

All in all it was a very enjoyable evening where we were able to introduce a different take on tabletop games to our friends.

The best bit about the evening was a text from Mr P who was researching different games.

Till next time!
